Dorian L. McCoy is an associate professor of higher education in the Department of Educational Leadership and Policy Studies in the College of Education, Health, and Human Sciences. He serves as coordinator of the College Student Personnel program and co-directs the UT Project GRAD Summer Institute, which allows students to see the academic expectations of college and the personal dimensions needed to succeed as a college student.
Before arriving at UT seven years ago, McCoy worked in student life and human resource management at the University of Florida and Louisiana State University and was a G. W. Henderson Postdoctoral Fellow and assistant professor at the University of Vermont.
It was the chance to be closer to family and back in the land of, in his words, “big-time football” that brought him to UT. His office is filled with memorabilia that commemorates his time at schools where he’s studied and worked: Vermont, Florida, LSU, Arkansas State, and UT.
When he’s not on campus, McCoy can be found in the kitchen. At an early age, he began learning to cook from his grandmother. His first dish: a bologna sandwich.
McCoy’s culinary repertoire eventually matured, and now his specialty dish is homemade banana pudding—“not Jell-O brand pudding but homemade, where you mix flour, sugar, and milk. I stand by the stove, I stir it, and I make sure it doesn’t clump up,” McCoy said. “It’s got to be perfect or I’m throwing it away.”
If he didn’t do this . . .
He’d be some sort of a coach. He does not have a specific sport in mind but believes that he would be good working with student–athletes.
McCoy played baseball both his freshman and sophomore years at Henderson State University in Arkadelphia, Arkansas.
Favorite spot on campus
While attending the 2016 faculty bookplate reception, McCoy discovered a terrace on the sixth floor of Hodges Library that overlooks Knoxville, the mountains, and the Tennessee River.
